KIDNEY STONE: CAUSES, SYMPTOMS & PREVENTION

Our kidneys produce urine by filtering waste and extra water from the blood. Kidneys also help to regulate water & electrolyte balance in our body. When the number of certain substances such as calcium, oxalate & phosphorus increase in the urine, it causes kidney stone formation.
Some factors leading to the formation of kidney stones include family history, dehydration, obesity, certain medical conditions, digestive diseases, certain diets, etc. Dehydration increases the risk of developing kidney stones due to low urine volume. Too much salt, processed foods, or animal protein in your diet can also lead to kidney stones.
A kidney stone does not cause any discomfort until it moves around in the urinary tract. Some kidney stones are expelled out along with urine with little or no discomfort. If a kidney stone gets stuck in the urinary tract and obstructs the flow of urine, it can cause pain in the side and back, below the ribs. Other symptoms may include nausea & vomiting, blood in the urine & a constant need to pass urine.
TIPS TO PREVENT KIDNEY STONE
• Keep yourself hydrated.
• Add more citrus to your diet such as lemons, oranges, etc.
• Take enough calcium from food sources such as milk, curd, cheese, legumes, nuts, seeds, etc. Avoid calcium supplements.
• Eat a moderate amount of protein. Eat less protein from animal sources like fish, chicken, etc.
• Limit your salt intake.
• Drink alcohol in moderation
• Reduce intake of added sugars such as cakes, candy, soft drinks, juices, etc.
• Avoid stone-forming foods such as beetroot, spinach, chocolate, tea, and most nuts.
